The International Day of Peace began over twenty five years ago.
The United Nations General Assembly designated the IDP on September 21st, as a day of cease fire, requesting a minute of silence for world peace to be observed around the globe at twelve noon, and world wide Peace building activities to held.
There are now more than two thousand supporting organizations, in one hundred and ninety countries holding IDP celebrations, and working toward creating a worldwide culture of Peace.

These organizations have specific projects that the yoga world can collectively support to take action towards the critical issues of our times: Global Warming, AIDS prevention, and the effects of poverty and war.
TREES FOR THE FUTURE helps people of the world's degraded lands save their homes and way of life through planting trees and bringing back forests. They have assisted people in 12,000 villages of Asia, Africa and the Americas, to plant 50 million permanent, beneficial trees.
YOUTHAIDS - An education and prevention initiative which uses media, pop culture, music, theatre and sport to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and reach 600 million young people in more than 60 countries with life-saving messages, products, services and care.
(RED) - Teaming up with iconic brands from Gap to American Express, (RED) branded products are created with a portion of the proceeds going to The Global Fund, to help women adn children in Africa with HIV/AIDS.
WAR CHILD - A network of independent organisations, working across the world to help children affected by war. It was founded upon a fundamental goal: to advance the cause of peace through investing hope in the lives of children caught up in the horrors of war.
CIRCLE OF LIFE FOUNDATION - Contribute to and be educated on sustainable living and conscious lifestyle choices that positively affect all life on Earth. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the largest animal rights organization in the world, working through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.
PETA focuses its attention on the areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry.
